Ten years ago I watched a BBC documentary about a dive between the tectonic plates in Iceland called Silfra.  I said back then that if I had a bucket list, this dive should be on it.

Egmont a Folk High School in Denmark asked me to come up with a proposal for a large-scale mural in a swimming hall. The place is named Vandhalla, in reference to Nordic mythology, Valhalla (Danish ‘vand’ = ‘water’). 

I came up with the idea that the painting should be inspired by the fabulous underwater view of Silfra, and we made an agreement about the project

In the summer 2024 – I went to Iceland for the dive. I spent ten hours in Reykjavik doing a dry suit course, and the next day at 8 AM I was the first diver in the 2-degree cold water.

I have never seen anything like this in my whole life. Because of the melting water from a nearby glacier, the underwater visibility is one of the best in the world. The underwater world is astonishing, and the deep blue is indescribable for a painter.. The fact, that you are able to touch both the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates, which are moving apart by one inch each year, tells a story of geologic evolution many million years back  

And this spring the painting is was completed and now hanging at the wall at the swimmingpool at Egmont Folk School
